First, make sure you have the proper lighting for your room. Many bathrooms do not have windows, so make sure you have some good lights set up. Too little light and you won't be able to see your reflection, but too much and you'll feel like you're on display. If you have windows, make sure they're sealed and insulated properly.

Second, make sure you have enough storage in your bathroom for all your toiletries, especially if you want to keep anything private.

Third, make sure all your outlets are GFCI outlets. These grounded outlets help reduce the chances of electrical shock, especially around water. You may have to replace old outlet boxes to improve the design.

Fourth, things like zero threshold showers that don't have a curb, wall mounted sinks, and lever style handles for faucets make your bathroom look modern and make it more accessible.

Last, make sure to seal around your sink, shower, and tub with a sealant that's made to last for a long time with exposure to water. Products like DAP Quick Seal Plus or DAP Silicon Plus are ideal. DAP 3.0 Premium sealant has Microban® which helps resist the growth of mildew.
